ENGLISH
It has now been 145 years since the UvA Orchestra J.Pzn Sweelinck was founded. This year the orchestra is celebrating its 29th anniversary, which was celebrated at the beginning of this year with a festive lustrum concert. The Sweelinck Orchestra is still flourishing: they rehearse diligently under the direction of the inspiring conductor Konradin Herzog (and party just as hard), every other year the orchestra goes on tour to a foreign destination and every project concerts are given in, among others, Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ and Het Concertgebouw. None of this would be possible without the enthusiasm and commitment of the orchestra members. This enthusiasm was there in 1878 and is palpable to this day.
Its founding in 1878 makes Sweelinck the oldest symphony orchestra in Amsterdam. It consists of more than seventy enthusiastic students from Amsterdam universities and other educational institutions as well as students from other cities. The orchestra rehearses every Thursday evening in the Singelkerk in the center of Amsterdam, after which there are drinks until the early hours. The student orchestra offers students the opportunity to develop their musical talent at a high level and to give concerts at special locations at home and abroad, while also enjoying a lot of friendship and conviviality.
Over the years the orchestra has performed many striking programmes. In each programme the Sweelinck Orchestra strives to perform a contemporary composition or realize innovative concepts. Last spring, for example, the orchestra brought together two grand symphonies with the Titans project. Rarely have Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and Mahler's First Symphony been performed in the same evening. The orchestra often plays together with talented soloists such as the versatile cellist Anastasia Feruleva, who performed the solo part of Dvořák's Cello Concerto in B minor for us this fall, or the New Amsterdam Clarinet Quartet with which Sweelinck performed a special performance of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Collaborations with modern composers are also often on the programme. In recent years, for example, the orchestra has played compositions by Guillermo Lago, Reza Namavar and Kaija Saariaho.
The Sweelinck Orchestra has served as a breeding ground for various talented conductors such as Edo de Waart, Lucas Vis and Roland Kieft. After the departure of Harmen Cnossen due to his appointment to the Marine Band of the Royal Navy, the orchestra was led by Libia Hernández. Konradin Herzog has been a part of the Sweelinck Orchestra since January 2016. With his musical insight and eye for good discipline, he has managed to continue the constructive rehearsal culture and has brought the Sweelinck Orchestra to a high musical level over the past six years.
The Sweelinck Orchestra can also be found on international stages. For example, last summer the orchestra took part in the European Student Orchestra Festival in Toulouse, where Sweelinck was able to make music for several days with student orchestras from all over Europe. The orchestra also regularly goes on tour. The orchestra has previously traveled to Italy, Ukraine, Finland, Georgia and China, and this year, after the spring concerts in Amsterdam, Sweelinck visited Romania and Bulgaria to perform the magical Fantasia programme four more times. This was the first tour in five years and the members eagerly awaited the trip.
